There are many Web 2.0 tools that can be used in or as classroom activities, three of which would be mentioned and explained how it can be used in my classroom session.
Virtual Field Trip
In a forth form classroom with ten students between the ages of 15-17, would be engaged in a lesson on Elements of design focusing on home and housing. The terms related to element of design would be discuss for example colour, balance, line etc. using a PowerPoint presentation. After the class discussion, the students would be taken on a class field trip to different furniture stores by using computer activities which the teacher would use step by step, link by link, click by click through a set of linked web-pages to acquire information to enable students to identify the various elements of design with connection to the home and housing. This may spark student interest as well as to enable a better understanding of the different elements of design. The web 2.0 tool Virtual field trip would use to carry out the class trip without leaving the classroom which it gives students a bit of the “field trip experience” without the need for practical concern such as money, time and also limited location to be visited within a short period. Virtual field is a guided exploration through the World Wide Web that organizes a collection of pre-screened, thematically based web pages into a structured online learning experience. (Foley, 2003).

Challenges faced using
this tool may cause distraction among students in which they may wonder off and
do their own thing, just like any out of class field trip.
Virtual Learning Environment
A group of sixteen
students from a first form classroom between the ages 11-13 would be engaged in
the topic beverages. The term would be defined and types of beverages would be
listed and explained. Additionally, the characteristics of beverages would be
discussed. At the end of the discussion, the students would be allotted a time frame
of 10 minutes, to use their electronic devices to collect at least one recipes
on hot and cold beverages. This would be done by using a virtual learning
environment, which refers to, a collection of software tools supporting
academic administration, teaching and research using the Internet, particularly
the World Wide Web. The web 2.0 tool, not only will be used to collect the
various recipes but it also enable them to experience on-line learning in a
positive ways. However, before using the website it would be checked to ensure
the content is current and easy to manipulate while students are collecting the
recipes, in which they would be used in the practical session when making the
different type of beverages.
Challenges faced with this tool, is even if the various sites were
checked to ensure they are easy to use, some students may select recipes with ingredients that are not easily found in the country or ingredients that may be expensive.
WebQuest
A second form class of
15 students would be engaged in the topic Housing, in which each type of houses
would be identified in relation to the structure. Also, the guidelines for
choosing a house will be listed and discussed. The web 2.0 tool that would be
used to carry out this lesson is known as WebQuest. It refers to an
inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that
learners work with comes from the web. The web would be used to research the
various structures of houses and pictures would be used to illustrate each
type. After information is collected, the piece would be presented in the form
of a chart so each students would be able to see pictures relating to the
various house structure, while each type of houses is being explained to get a
better understand of the various types.
The challenges faced, the information needed maybe very limited and they may not have the appropriate pic to match the various house structures that would be look at.
